Literary Looks: 50 Shades of Grey (Oh My!)

Ah, 50 Shades of Grey. You know it, you love (loathe?) it. I actually semi-read this book about a year ago, which involved flipping through the pages until I found the sex parts and reading those, and then getting confused/annoyed if I actually strayed into a section of dialogue.

Lately I've been trying to finish The Adventures of Augie March, and it's giving me serious reading fatigue. Bellow is a great writer, but I'm just not connecting with the story or the characters. I am fighting the urge to quit because I am one of those readers who HATES quitting a book (see this awesome guide to find out what kind of book reader you are--I am a cross-under chronological bookophile!).

In the midst of my fatigue, I decided to take a small break and re-read something that my brain would not have to work hard on. Like, at all. 50 Shades of Grey was a pretty easy choice. This time, I'm actually reading the non-sex parts, too, and just for fun, I've throw together a little literary look inspired by this book's deep, deep themes (pun intended).

Firstly, here is the Goodreads summary of the plot, in case you've been living under a rock the past 3 years...

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.
Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

...and the outfit. I felt that this amazing dress necessitated a side and front view:

1. Tina Tang Handcuff Pendant Necklace // Max & Chloe // $85
2. Triangle Cup Strappy Mesh Bra // Topshop // $36
3. Demobaza Deconstructed Viscose Jersey Dress // Luisa Viaroma // $291
4. Large Metallic Carry-All Pouch // American Apparel // $75
5. Jeffrey Campbell Talulah Laced Bootie // Nasty Gal // $140 (30% off)!

Have you read 50 Shades? What did you think?

100 Happy Days Update: Days 13-18

So. It's been one of those weeks. Not due to daylight savings time (at least I don't think), but due to a horrendous two-day marathon migraine and one sick kitty who's been to the veterinary clinic three times in the last three days. I therefore missed finding happy moments on Wednesday and Thursday, but will extend the challenge by two days to make up for this lapse. Here are the photos I took to document days 13-18.

Day 13: A crazy delicious meal at DLUX in Madison. Can you say Parmesan and Truffle Cream Fries? Oh yes. If you are ever in the Madison area, I highly recommend it.

Day 14: My husband came back to me from a 7-day work trip to Canada. I was so happy to have him home. Here he is, slightly tipsy on a wine called Bitch...

Day 15: A perfect Sunday evening spent watching Ghostbusters in bed with my love...

Day 16: 54° outside?!? What?!? (p.s. I know this is a rather boring picture. I like to imagine the phrase "What's happening" being spoken by Bill Lumbergh. It's way more fun that way.)

Day 17: A Nutty Ginger drink at Bandung.

Day 18: My baby Romeo, one of the great loves of my life, wearing a cone and hopefully on his way to a full recovery.

But enough about me. How are you? What have you been up to lately?

Fashion In Film | Clue

I have been a huge fan of the 1985 movie Clue, based on the classic children's board game, since I was a teenager. It's super camp and full of zippy one-liners, plus I adore Tim Curry. There's loads of fashion inspiration to be found in this film.

Miss Scarlet with the lead pipe in the library.

I love Scarlet's unique combination of emerald green and baby blue, and these velvet wedges have that 90's vibe that's so popular this spring.

100 Happy Days: Day 12

On day 12 of #100happydays, I had a good long talk with one of my dearest friends, Jessica. She still lives and teaches in Vegas. Here is a photo montage of us together. It's mostly photos of us from super hero day at our middle school. I believe I was Reading Girl and she was Earth Girl. As you can see, our costumes were pretty freakin' sweet...

I am really missing my long hair!

100 Happy Days: Day 11

I don't know if this makes me feel happy exactly, but it definitely makes me feel a sense of accomplishment. And also, it's pretty much what I spent my entire day doing, so choices are limited here on day 11 of #100happydays...

I really hope it doesn't snow again before my husband is back from his work trip. I would happily scoop the litter box every day if he's willing to be in charge of all shoveling.
